Paycheck Fairness Act

April 8, 2010

In 1963, women earned 59 cents for every dollar paid to men.  Even now, women on average make 77 cents for every dollar men earn. The disparity is even wider for women of color.

Last year the House passed the Paycheck Fairness Act.  The legislation, which is pending in the Senate, would strengthen the Equal Pay Act of 1963 by, among other things, requiring employers to prove that wage disparities are job-related and required by business necessity, prohibiting retaliation against employees who share salary information with co-workers, and allowing successful plaintiffs to pursue compensatory and punitive damages.

April 20th will be Equal Pay Day.  If this issue is important to you, consider contacting your senators to urge them to vote for the passage of the Paycheck Fairness Act.
